The Mesoamerican Reef System (MBRS) is the largest coral reef in the Atlantic Ocean and one of the marine ecosystems, most biodiverse on the planet. Stretching along more than 1,000 miles from the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico) to the Bay Islands (Honduras), through Belize and Guatemala.
This system offers an interconnected network of coastal habitats that support more than 500 species of fish, colorful corals and endangered species, such as sea turtles and manatees. It is also home to the largest aggregation known of the whale shark.
With its mangroves, sea grasses and coral reefs, the SAM is a haven of biodiversity, and a key ecosystem for coastal protection, food security and local economy of millions of people in the region.
